Namiki Yukari Royal Urushi

The beauty is deepened by using non-oil lacquer for the final coat and a polishing method called “ Roiro Urushi Shiage (Non-oil lacquer finish)”, where the process of repeatedly rubbing in raw lacquer after polishing with a special charcoal.
This technique, though painstaking, gives this fountain pen its deep lustrous sheen and has been used by Namiki craftsmen since 1918.

Urushi Lacquer - Roiro Shiage
Roiro Shiage is the term for "black polished lacquer" and is considered the most difficult and time consuming lacquer technique. It takes many steps and days to create lacquer. After a couple of weeks the Urushi is well dried and reaches the hardness of glass as far high quality Urushi is used.
